I have always been fascinated by human oddities. After watching season 4 of American Horror Story’s circus season, I was set on being a 1920’s freak! I wanted to be sexy with a hint of strange so I opted for a Bearded Lady.
The key component was a great beard made from human hair. I went with a full blond beard bought at a local theater costume shop. Firmly glued in place, it took about 5 minutes and looked so realistic.
For hair and makeup I wanted a very glamorous look to offset the masculine beard. I applied smokey eyeshadow with false lashes, drew a thin dark brow and a deep burgundy lip color which I also added to my eyes and cheeks. For my hair I gave my first attempt at finger waves. While it took over an hour, it was well worth it. It was achieved with setting mousse, clips and lots of patience.
My outfit was flamboyant and authentic to the era. I bought the floral and tasseled duster coat at an antique store and added fur detail. The headdress was constructed out of ostrich feathers and attached to a headband. I wore a floor length gown and a long beaded necklace found on Etsy.
Halloween 2015 was topped off by singing Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” at a country karaoke bar in full costume. The crowd went wild. What a liberating experience wearing a beard and looking cute!
