Cool Homemade Little Mermaid Costume

Makinzi is 6 years old and a dreamer. She wanted to be a LITTLE MERMAID for Halloween. The problem with store-bought mermaid costumes is that the tail restricts movement so we decided on a Homemade Little Mermaid Costume.

I made her tail fin from 6 in strips of overlapping twill. This allowed her to move her legs freely, climb stairs and even play on playground equipment. The bodice is detached from the tail; this allows for it to adjust and fit a taller or shorter child (and makes bathroom trips easier). Because the tail is not attached to the bodice, it could be worn higher on the waist to keep it from getting to close to the ground. It has elastic on the back of the skirt to make it look fitted.

I added white lining to the costume. The tail’s material is thin and it would have been a little breezy for trick or treating without the lining plus it makes a better quality costume. She loved it and says she wants to “wear it for days” and next Halloween. She was not shy to tell people about her costume and how her mommy made it.

  1. What I like the most of your costume was the top, I will try to do mine like yours. My daughter is four and she loves Ariel, and she is a dreamer too. Congratulations for your creation.

  3. I did not use a pattern. The top is made in 2 parts. The front is 3 layers to make it not bunch up; outer, interfacing fused onto outer and a simple cotton for the lining. The back has sewn rows across to add elastic (like a waistband) and do not use interfacing on the back. I then sewed the two together. The tail was made with 2 extra inches on the waist and elastic across the but to help make it snug but movable. The tale has 2 slits down the side and the tulle is sewn on like a triangle.
