Coolest Homemade Rainbow Costume

I made this Homemade Rainbow Costume completely from scratch. The dress is made of six different fabrics sewn together to show the six colors of the rainbow both from the front and the back of the dress. Clouds at the bottom and the top of the dress finish the rainbow.

I carried pot of gold that actually opened up and functioned as a purse. The earrings are also home-made, and are in the shape of raindrops. The umbrella has clouds and a sun painted on it. The rainbow bracelet I wore was also home-made. Glitter all over my hair and body might represent the mist that is needed to create a rainbow.

The only detail that isn’t homemade is the shoes, really. I was really happy with how it turned out. I wore it to a Halloween party and it was a hit. I had a lot of fun making it and wearing it.

  1. Thank you! The umbrella was a plain blue umbrella that I bought. I painted it with the clouds and sun. I had planned to have “raindrops” hanging from it, but I ran out of time/motivation. Haha.

  2. I love this and want to make one for myself… what did you use as a dress design? Please help…. I need a costume to bartend in and this would be perfect.

  3. Thanks for all your comments! I didn’t really use a pattern… I think I found a dress pattern that had 6 panels and cut each panel in half to make 12 panels. I used the cheap satin fabric that they always have on sale at JoAnn’s around Halloween time.
