Coolest Homemade Spooky Ghost Halloween Costume

This Homemade Spooky Ghost Halloween Costume was made out of an old sheet. I cut a hole at the top and then hemmed around it leaving an opening. I pulled elastic through the hem and then sewed it together. Next I cut out holes for each arm and zig-zagged around the holes so they would not tear or fray. I put the costume on my little guy and trimmed it to the right length.

Next I took the left over sheet pieces and cut them in strips. I also used some cheese cloth and cut it into strips and last, used some tulle and cut it into strips.

I put the strips together; about five or six alternating strips of different fabric and sewed them together at the top. When I had bunch of these done, I zig-zagged them on the costume around the top near the neck line.

I bought a 4 foot length of plastic black chain and tacked it in two places securely. Last, I bought some glow in the dark paint…you can’t see it in this picture but I painted in on the strips and it glows great in the dark.

The hat is made using a white stocking hat. I put a piece of cheese cloth over it and tacked the ends inside the hat. Then I hand-sewed the sewn-together-strips on the cheese cloth in the hat. This way I didn’t ruin the hat as the strips are all sewn to the cheese cloth. I put the same glow in the dark paint on the strips of the hat so it would also glow in the dark.

Carter is wearing a white turtle neck shirt and white knit gloves with the costume. I spent $4.50 on the stocking cap; $1.00 on the white knit gloves, $4.00 on the plastic chain; $1.00 on the cheese cloth; $3.00 on the glow in the dark paint; and old sheet I already had; the tulle was left over from a baby shower. Total cost: $13.50

  2. My 3 year old is insisting on being a “scary ghost” I have no sewing skills what-so-ever, but I am in love with this costume so I am going to put towards the effort. He’s definitely going to be the scariest and cutest little ghost. Thanks so much for sharing!

  4. I’m making this for my son this year. I found a white stocking hat in the hat/glove section at walmart for $1.40. It was in with the women’s hats, but it fit perfect on my 4 year old. Does anyone know where I can find a black chain???

  5. I’m making this costume as I write this and, because I live in a cold climate, I am using a white knitted hat instead of the cap, so this might do for people who are having trouble finding a cap. This is a great costume for early winter–my son can wear a coat under it, a winter hat and gloves and not spoil the affect. Thanks for posting this easy to make and very fun costume!!

  6. this is going to sound really lame I am sure, but how do you cut a circle out of the sheet? fold in half lengthwise and cut on the fold? like a half circle? I think that I am over thinking this and I am getting very frustrated. Also how did you figure out how much elastic to use? How big to cut the circle? I’ve got a pretty wiggly 4 year old and that isn’t helping……

  7. I love this costume. My 3 yr old wants to be a ghost. I bought everything and started it today. Excited to see how it turns out. I am not much of a sewer or handy with a sewing machine. But I hope it turns out well! Thanks for the idea and instructions!

  10. My son wanted to be a ghost this year & I found your photos. He didn’t seem pleased with the initial picture, however we did a trial run yesterday and he refused to take it off all day & ‘scared’ everyone everywhere. It was awesome. It was simple to make and I got lots of comments. I love the sock cap which kept me from worrying about yesterday’s cold snap. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
