Cool Voodoo Doll Costume

The Homemade Voodoo Doll Costume:
This year we stumbled on the idea of turning our entry way into a voodoo lair. It came about naturally as we started to decorate for the coming trick or treaters. My husband wanted to be the voodoo priest and my daughter decided to be a voodoo doll.

Preparation:
We searched second hand shops for a white long sleeved shirt and white pants. As luck would have it we also found a pair of white glove with black stiches. This fell perfectly into our plan. I took some black yarn and made exaggerated uneven stitches down the sides of the pants. I then sewed matching stiches onto the neckline, around the waist and where the arms attach on the shirt. My husband cut a heart out of red foam paper and added some stiches to that. I then sewed that to the shirt. I made sure that nothing was even or straight we wanted it to look like an amateur had sewn our doll together.

We took a white undershirt and cut the neck wider so it wouldn’t show around the collar. We then cut floral foam into ½ inch discs and covered them in masking tape. Using spray adhesive we glued the discs to the undershirt in the positions that we wanted the voodoo pins to stick into our doll. One under the heart and one on the side near her waist. The voodoo pins were made from bamboo garden sticks cut to length and then newspaper balled up and taped to the end with masking tape. My husband painted them with craft paint.

Assembly:
First my daughter put on the pants and the under shirt. Then the outside long sleeved shirt. We cut tiny holes in the heart and the side of the shirt where the pins would go and then slid the pins through into the floral foam. Then we stuffed her torso and legs with plastic bags from the grocery store to give her the stuffed doll look. A bonus was the cool sound effects when she moved it sounded like a doll stuffed with rice moving! Then we tied the ankles and sleeves with more black yarn to keep the bags in and to continue the illusion that she was stuffed. White socks and gloves completed the look.

I did her make up with white and black cream face paint. I just did a layer of white and then black lines for the stiches on the mouth and the eyes. Her hair was just a messy pony tail on top with bits hanging down to make it look unkempt.

The rest is Halloween history!
