Coolest Ideas and Tips for Making Halloween Costumes

Items needed…

Wood Lathing (purchase at local hardware store)
Cardboard
Duct Tape
Spray Paint, gray, black, light brown, dark brown, and white
Exacto Knife
Tacky Glue
Staple or tack gun
Metal or Wooden Frame (dimensions 28”x 21” welded or nailed in a rectangle)
4 Swivel Wheels
Wooden Dowel
Pair of old pantyhose
Pair of pants
Sneakers or boots
Zip Ties

Assembly:

Make frame using above dimensions out of the wood lathing, staple together. After frame is assembled, attached the roof by stapling to frame. Create shingles by using exacto knife to make several small squares/rectangles and attach to cardboard roof using tacky glue and also by stapling. Fill in between the wooden frame using cardboard reinforced by strips of duct tape to make it stronger.

Paint the frame using dark brown and the lighter brown in the center pieces. Use the gray and light brown together to paint the roof. Using cardboard create a front piece to fit so the pants can hang over top. Paint the inside white. Using an exacto knife cut two moons in either side of outhouse.

Attach the frame to the bottom using Zip ties. Before you attach the bottom frame make sure your wheels are attached to this frame. This will allow your child to move freely. Stuff the pantyhose with newspaper or plastic bags – this can be stapled to the cardboard so it stays. Stuff pantyhose into the pants and stuff the bottom of the pants into the shoes or boots.

Dress your child up like a hunter. He/she can stand behind using the dowel rod as a device for pushing, just be sure to measure rod to fit the inside and staple or nail. You may put a roll of toilet paper on this rod as well!

I love making Halloween costumes and nothing beats the toilet costume. I love original costumes and this one won first place in a contest at work! The costume also made the front page of the local newspaper!

I found a box that fitted over my shoulders and covered it in white glossy paper. I made a lid to match and cut holes for head and arms. I purchased a lightweight plastic toilet seat which I strapped to a belt on my waist and mounted a roll of toilet paper to the side of the box.

Took a piece of white paper, printed a large blue water spot on it and taped it to the underside of the ring. I added the “required” necessities such as a bowl, fresh genuine stainless steel handle and plunger. I ended up with non-stop laughs all day.

Every time my son made it down the hall to bathroom he would end up playing in the toilet, so that’s where I came up with the idea. I enjoy making Halloween costumes, so I started off by using flat side of a box to make the bowl. I shaped it to look like a toilet bowl and duck taped it to stay in the shape I wanted it to stay in.

Then, I got a small box with both ends that had flaps on it so it was an enclosed box and hot glued it to the back. After that I made a cardboard rim for the toilet and made a lid pattern out of cardboard also.

Then, I added a flush handle made of cardboard and spray painted it silver.

On the side of the toilet I cut two small slits and made a toilet paper holder and added a thin roll of paper. Then I printed out a pattern of Draino and cut it out and added it to a piece of cardboard also and cut around it and taped it to the top of toilet.

After that I took more cardboard and made a plunger shape and spray painted it red. Then I rolled a brown piece of construction paper to make the handle for the plunger and taped this to the plunger’s bottom part.

I sprayed the whole toilet white and let dry and then gave a second coat of spray paint. Then I added toilet paper and plunger to his head and printed out an “Out of Order” sign for the front of the toilet in creepy font and taped to the front of toilet.

This took about 5 to 6 hours because I had to wait for the paint to dry. He won first place and grand prize over all in a contest with this costume.

I love making Halloween costumes, but, believe me, this costume was difficult! I had to experiment with various materials and techniques and it took several days.

I’m embarrassed to say my costume isn’t an original idea, I saw a homemade “Turd” costume in the Halloween parade in New York City years and years ago and I thought it was the darn funniest costume I’d ever seen. I always wanted to make one myself.

I sewed foam to a cotton backing material (the backing was so I could slip in and out of it, I figured the foam itself would be too grippy to get in and out of). Notice the pieces of yellow “corn” stuck in around it.. I made an elastic stretch band to go around the backside of my head to hold my face up tight to the hole cut into the foam.

I wore the costume to one of my club’s October monthly business meetings. I think everyone got a big kick out of it and thought it was funny (I was terribly afraid there would be people there who would’ve been mortified and offended).
