Hershey’s Dark “Chow”colate Kiss Costume for a Dog

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! My birthday is October 30th and every year I get to celebrate with a spooky cake, a big bag of candy corn, or a “boo”quet of dead flowers? (Cackle! Cackle!) Sewing Halloween costumes was, and still is, one of my very favorite treats to make for the kiddos in my family.

My treat this year was to make a Halloween costume for our family pet! It was my very first attempt to sew a pet costume. I think that it turned out “spooktacular!” I hope that all of you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed sewing it!

This pet costume was an original 1990’s McCall’s 4956 sewing pattern for big and little people. I altered it a bit to fit our 60 pound, furry friend, Cookie. Cookie is a 5-year-old female Chow. By the look on her face in this photo she is thinking that her costume is a WOW! The only altercations that I had to make were the placement of the armholes. As you can see, I placed the holes in the front. You may think that this costume was difficult for her to walk in, but I made sure that it was very soft and comfortable for her to sit down in. Had to stuff, stuff, stuff, and stuff a lot of stuffing! This pattern also included a HERSHEY’S™ KISSES iron-on transfer for the “paper plume” which I made out of lightweight interfacing. I outlined the letters with glue and then sprinkled the glue with purple glitter… Because every girl loves a little “sbarkle! For the “wrapper” I chose a metallic purple fabric because it matched Cookie’s tongue! And, because I love dark chocolate!

To my “lil pumpkin” Cookie – “I love you more than dark chocolate… and that is a lot! Happy “Howl”ween!
