Coolest Family Lego Movie Costumes

When making this group of Lego movie costumes, I made a lot of mistakes and had to rip apart and re-glue a lot, so don’t be discouraged. If you have a family as big as mine, I suggest you start at the beginning of the month, and work little by little so you’re not stressed. And feel free to wing it. Be prepared to hear the song “Everything is awesome” at every house that’s seen the movie. The costumes are bulky; stairs wont be your friend…LOL! But I must say, the kids wouldn’t have changed a thing. It was the best Halloween we had. We had some falls but the costumes held together. And be prepared for people to stop you for pictures.

The Characters:

Materials:

hot glue gun – mini or large
glue sticks
high gloss spray paint (color based on character)
building form concrete tube 8-12 inches
Felt (color based on character)
cardboard boxes (for body, based on size of person) I used a wardrobe box for lord business
tulle (red and orange and blue and white) Princess unikitty
yarn (think strand) Skinny strand will take for ever to glue
Soft foam roll
bedding cushion fluff roll
acrylic paint for details
X-Acto knife
clothes to match
plastic solo cup (lord business)
tin cans (lord business)
screen door screen patch (to cover the eyes and mouth)
Hard foam dome, and cone 8″ and 12″

Measure

Measure top of head to shoulder length and cut the building form carboard tube. I have found that 11 inches works well for adults size heads on an 10-12 in width tube. for the 8 in. tube, I suggest 9 inches. If you are adding a foam dome you can decrease the size of the tube so that the head isnt so tall. Pre-cut and measure everthing first.

Drawing

Draw the face of your character on a sheet of paper (construction paper holds well) and tape to the the face of the tube, making sure you measure where your eyes will need to go. Add Full color to the paper the way you want the face to look so you can see where it should go and make adjustments before you cut. I pulled movie, still form the net to use for our faces.

Tape the face over that place and with the paper on as your guide, cut the eye holes and mouth. Also cut the foam domes, as well and the tubing to size. I suggest using a serrated knife, or mini power saw if you have one. We didn’t use one. I wanted to see if it could be made with out power tools. And it can, but it takes some muscle cutting the tube, and foam dome. Do not use a serrated Knife on the foam dome or you will have jagged edges and snow every where! I found out the hard way, lol!

Hot glue

Get quality Hot glue sticks from a craft store; do not get Walmart hot glue, It cools way too fast and wont stick. You will use more glue, you better off paying for the good stuff. Hot glue your pieces together. I worked on one head at a time and got those done before I did bodies. Each is different and requires different details. For princess Unikitty, I measured and cut the colored felt and hot glued it to a old cat litter box. I know the irony, LOL, I tried paint, it didn’t work; felt made the lines cleaner.

When gluing the yarn as hair, make sure you use thick yarn. if the hair is supposed to go up fold the strand in half to the desired length and glue the loop along the edge first then gather the yarn the way you want it to flow. Put a line of glue width-wise and place the hair in that spot. This way you can glue multiple strands at once and not one at a time. when doing dark hair, spray the bedding fluff black as filler for the hair to give it thickness, glue to the head first where you want the yarn to go, then place yarn. Heads with hair does not need a hard foam dome.

Bodies

Cut the Card bard boxes into sections. Including the flaps. Then measure out per person size for the shape of the bodies. Use the flaps as the shoulder and the sides of the body. Cut the holes for the head and the arms before you hot glue the body together. Make sure you can get you head, and arms through.

Paint

Spray paint your body and heads. Make sure that they are completely dry before adding details. When all else fails, felt is your friend.

Unikitty and Lord business and other

The tail was made with wire and yarn. Using the method to make a tutu. I put the yarn onto a circle of wire, then looped it through the ribbon to make the tutu. We used flamed fabric to glue to the back of the pink shirt. I used a hard foam cone and a solo cup cut in half for the horn, and black yarn for the eye lashes. She was all felt, no paint

Lord business helmet was made with a box and soft foam and felt. I used a clear solo cup cut in half for the center piece. The coffee cups (tin cans) made it top heavy and it kept falling. So I recommend gluing it to the tube head and not leaving it as a separate piece. I also added LED candles to make it glow at night. I hot glued the cape to his box and the used foam and felt for the black part and tie.

I used felt to make the eyes and teeth glued to the screeb patch material.
