After a recent trip to our local botanical gardens, I was inspired to make a peacock costume. I took my inspiration from the great peacock costumes already on this website, and from the peacock costumes you can buy.
I wanted something to make the tail stay up, so I got some foam. I cut it in the shape of a peacock fann-tail. I got a yard of fabric, (which comes folded in half), and cut it around the foam, using the folded part as the bottom so I only had to glue around the scalloped edge. Then to make the peacock feather “eyes”, I printed a picture of an actual feather from Google, enlarging it to the size I wanted, then tracing the pieces from felt.
To make the straps, I used some ribbon and a D- ring so I could put it on and take it off like a backpack. I made a matching hair barrette. I wore a green bathing-suit cover up dress that I had, and wallah! A peacock costume that was a Halloween hit!
Thank you for posting that, it looks great. I want to make it for my daughter. How did you attach the ribbon to it. Glue? I’m very impressed.
That’s a great idea! Thanks for explaining how to make the costume so nicely. I’ll definitely make your Halloween costume for this Halloween. Thank you!
I made this costume before I had a sewing machine, so yes, I used the same fabric glue I used to sew down the scallops around the feather fan.
