After shopping around for cupcake costumes, I decided to construct my own Homemade Cupcake Costume since 1) I was on a budget, and 2) the few cupcake costumes I’ve seen were only in kids sizes. I searched online for many ideas on where and how to start putting the costume together but in the end, I decided to wing it: I bought the materials first, then figured out how to put them together.
For the “cake,” I cut two trapezoid-shaped pieces made of poster board and used hot glue to wrap both pieces in brown cotton fabric. Using the same brown fabric, I fashioned two straps that would connect the two trapezoid shaped pieces and would allow them to be worn over my shoulders like overalls. Additionally, I glued straps on the sides so that I can adjust the cake to have a rounder appearance.
For the frosting “cup,” I cut two cloud-shaped pieces (one bigger than the other) out of pink felt. I cut a hole in the center of each piece and layered them together. I hot glued snips of colored straws to act as sprinkles. Getting into the costume was easy: just tie the “cake” over my shoulders and adjust the straps at my waist, and then layer the frosting over my shoulders.
I’ve gotten many compliments on this costume and always have to explain how I made it! This has been my favorite costume so far! My boyfriend dressed up as a baker with an apron and a mittens. I decorated his apron with an applique that looked like my cupcake costume.
