Here are our Despicable Me costumes from Halloween 2011! These are my sons ages 10, 8, and 5. The minions were completely homemade. They were Halloween witch cauldrons hot glued to a camping mat, then painted yellow. The eyes, goggle straps, hair and mouths were glued on craft foam. I bought fabric and wrapped it around foam for the overalls (I can’t sew!!).
The goggles were jewelry cases from a craft store painted silver. I painted on the Gru symbols with fabric paint. I don’t believe the minions cost anymore than $50 a piece. The Gru mask we had to buy, but we pieced together things we had to make the suit and added a Gru symbol zipper made with cardboard & fabric paint. The scarf was 2 dollar store scarfs glued together for that perfect “Gru” length.
People went nuts over these. They went Trick-or-Treating at a local mall and a line formed of little kids who wanted to get their pictures with them!

I love these costumes! The funny thing was that I was a Despicable Me minion for Halloween this year.
My 3 little boys are in love with these costumes!! I found the Gru mask on-line but I am not that crafty to make the minions…hehe! Those are awesome!!! Interested in selling any of them?
I would love to make this costume for my son…the only thing I don’t quite understand is the camping mat. Not sure what that is. A tarp? Can you explain that part for me? Thank you, thank you, thank you!! He will LOVE this!!
Can you explain how the mat attaches to the cauldron — it looks so flat — not sure how you did it. Also, how did you attach the mat in the back and how did the kids get it on and off?

Sorry for the very delayed response. The camping mat is made of a blue sponge material. You can get them at any sporting goods store. You attach the camping mat to the widest part of the cauldron. Then the minion goggle strap covers the connection. In regards to selling these… these things are pretty beat up now. It would be hard to ship them as well. What did you use so the kids could see?
The costumes are in rough shape because they are 2 years old and would get even more destroyed through shipping.
It has to fit your kids head and be as wide as their body.
You have to cut a wide opening where your kids eyes are. Then you have to cut holes through the goggle and the eyeball. Then the child sees through the minions eye.
Can you give a little more detailed instruction and any pics on your minion costume. Thanks Helen
Did the costume/cauldron just sit on your child’s head? Did your child get hot inside the costume? Trying to figure how to make this costume. Thanks for sharing
I was wondering what the goggles are made out of and did your kids get hot while you were trick-or-treating.
I love this costume and have already purchased the mat and cauldron. Plan on working on this tonight. Did you have any problem spray painting the black cauldron and mat? Also did you have the inside rest on his shoulders for height, and if so how?

You have to drill air holes on top the cauldron. There are openings for the arms and eyes so they really didn’t get too hot(keep in mind I live in NY). The cauldron rests on the childs head, put a little foam piece inside the cauldron for comfort. For the goggles, you have to get a cardboard round jewelry box at a craft store and exacto out circles to see through. Put a white foam circle inside the box with an eye hole and paint a black ring around the hole for the eye. So your child looks through the minions eye. Embelish the out side of the goggles with foam circles to emulate the screws they have on them. I hope this helps.
Prime the mat and the cauldron white first, then spray it yellow…..
