DIY Jack Skellington Costume

I originally wasn’t even going to make a Halloween costume but then a few of my friends ended up having their birthday’s over the Halloween weekend and they made it “mandatory” that everyone dressed up for the occasion. Since I hadn’t actually dressed up for the holiday in so many years I figured I had better make a decent costume, which was easier said than done.

It wasn’t until a few weeks later while watching The Nightmare Before Christmas that I thought it would be amazing to dress up as Jack Skellington. So I originally went online to find a Jack Skellington costume that would work, sadly all the costumes of Jack Skellington you could buy online were quite lame so I decided to create my own.

I didn’t have that much time to get all the materials together as I only had 1 week to finish, so I went out that week to value village and bought an old black suit, some fabric paint, some fabric and a few other things to make the costume perfect. Once I got everything together I started by using the fabric paint to paint the stripes onto the suit (there were no pin stripe suits with wide enough stripes). This proved harder than I thought as I had to paint it several times because of the dullness of the fabric paint, but after it was done it was starting to look decent.

After I finished the with the suit I got to work on making the ‘bat bow tie’, which was actually surprisingly easy. All I had to do was use a picture of bow tie Jack was wearing online as a template and I cut the wings out of some leather looking black fabric and proceeded to paint some white lines on. After that I glued it all together, making the head out of little black/white cotton balls and ears from small pieces of left over fabric.

Now the only thing left was to figure out what I was going to do about my head and face, luckily for me my neighbor is a make up artist. So with the rest of the costume set I had her get to work with a bald cap and some make-up and all of a sudden I was none other than the pumpkin king himself, Jack Skellington.
