Coolest Homemade Toucan Sam and Cap’n Crunch Costumes

Bringing back fond childhood memories, we decided to go with cereal characters as our theme. We got many compliments on our Homemade Toucan Sam and Cap’n Crunch Costumes at various parties and fun to make! Took us only a couple of days and a few hours.

CAP’N CRUNCH
Materials: 1 1/2″ Foam, Gold stretchy fabric, Cardboard, Gold fringe, Blue Fleece, White felt, elastic band for mustache, Hot glue gun, Needle and Thread

Process: For the hat, I used foam (borrowed the idea from online), and pieced together pieces using glue and cutting out a big enough hole for his head. I covered the foam with the blue fleece and a glue gun. The “C” and buttons on the jacket are pieces of cardboard cutout and covered with the stretchy gold fabric. The jacket was sewn together by me, epaulets pieces of cardboard with a layer of foam on top, covered with the same gold stretchy fabric, and gold fringe stitched on around the edge.

The collar is foam covered in blue fleece, sewn into the jacket. Mustache was made by him, attached with the elastic band from a party hat, white felt (cheaper) for the ‘stache and eyebrows’.

TOUCAN SAM
Materials: 1 1/2″ Foam, Black and White felt, Blue Fleece, Fabric for beak, Visor, Multi-colored Feathers for tail and head, Hot Glue Gun, Needle and Thread (also, blue tank and shorts, orange tights)

Process: For the wings, I sewed together a sleeve from leftover fleece from Cap’n Crunch. I ran out of fleece to make a big wing, so I used pieces to make “feathers” and sewed them along the edge. Worked pretty well. The beak was made with a $1 visor from a craft store, foam glued and taped on in the shape of the beak, and covered with different colored fabrics to match Toucan Sam. I glued in a few blue feathers to the back of the head (hard to see).

Tail (also hard to see), was a piece of foam with multi-colored feathers glued in, so they would stick out. I covered the small foam piece with blue felt and velcro-ed it to my shorts. Worked great!

  1. I love that you made your own jacket too. I am a stickler when it comes to costumes and a good enough blue jacket did not exist. I only wish that i made it larger and a stiffer fabric (i had to iron on a fabric stiffener on every piece i used). But again, GREAT JOB and i love the Toucan Sam costume too! Keep the creativity flowing.
