Coolest Homemade Caterpillar and Cheshire Cat Costumes

This year for Halloween, my boyfriend and I dressed in Homemade Caterpillar and Cheshire Cat Costumes.

My costume was very easy: I bought 3 pairs of striped tights, one pair I wore as regular tights. With another pair I made a top by cutting a hole in the crotch and holes in the feet for my fingers. I cut the legs off the third pair of tights and stuffed one of the legs to make a tail. I sewed up the top portion to make a cat hat and glued felt on to make the ears stand out. I also bought a pair of pink furry boot covers.

My boyfriend’s costume was a bit more time- consuming. I bought some fabric and polyfill stuffing and sewed on the stomach. For the arms I used panty hose stuffed with the polyfil and used the fabric to sew sleeves around them; I sewed gloves on the ends. I made a hood with the fabric and antennae with pipe cleaners. It was a fun project and we both had people asking us for pictures all night!

  1. I made the smile out of hot pink cardboard and glued it to a shish-kabob wooden stick, that was probably the easiest part. The fur boot covers were on Amazon for about $5.

  2. I ordered the tights online, I can’t remember which website but there are a lot of specialty hosiery sites with striped tights. I think black and pink striped tights would look good too. The hat was made from the crotch area of a pair of tights, I cut both legs off and sewed up the leg holes into points to make a little cat hat and used pink felt on the ears. You can’t see my tail in this picture but I stuffed on of the legs I cut off with polyfil and pinned it on the back- it looked really cool!

  3. I made the hat out of the crotch part of a pair of tights. I cut the legs off and sewed up the leg holes into points to look like ears, and glued on pink felt triangles. I stuffed one of the legs that were cut off full of polyfil and pinned it on the back as a tail (can’t see very well in the picture, but it looked great!)

  4. I do have a bunch but I don’t think I can add anymore to this page. Too bad they didn’t have the multiple picture upload option last year. :(

  5. You have inspired me to buy stripped tights for my 10 year boy for the upcoming Steampunk Alice in Wonderland Cleveland Comic-Con. Thank you!
