Coolest Wizard of Oz Costume

First I confess, I did borrow the Dorothy Costume so technically all I did was add some braids and red shoes. But the rest of this Homemade Wizard of Oz Costume is purely from scratch!

I do not “sew” really – I just fake it til I make it & I do not use sewing patterns & everything that is sewn is down crudely by hand – but that seemed to work out ideally for the scarecrow costume. I didn’t want real straw as I knew it would be scratchy on my little guy so I fringed straw colored fleece around the bottoms of black pants & the homemade shirt sleeves. I sewed some patches throughout (from inexpensive fabric remnants). Made a simple cone shaped hat, again with fleece & then added a triangle painted nose.

We even had our lab, Jake participate & I sewed him a “mane” out of the remaining fleece from the scarecrow costume.

I think my favorite of the bunch was the tin man costume – this was accomplished by using excessive amounts of silver metallic duct tape (I think we used 4 or 5 rolls). We took a pair of old (hole-in-the-knee) jeans & covered them in duct tape then I covered a turtle neck arms/neck & chest (a size too big) in duct tape. Then I took a too big sweatshirt (purchased at the dollar store), cut the sleeves off & again covered it in duct tape. When this was done we had to cut it up the back to get it on & then literally, duct-taped it on.

Then we added the basic heart with a clock (made on my printer) and that fabulous silver face paint we bought at a costume store, where we also purchased the oil can hat.
