This bright and vibrant colored pixie costume including, the headband was handmade from 11 reclaimed wool sweaters, the only items purchased were the wings and tights. This costume has won first place in the costume contest at Excalibur in Chicago. It took approximately 2 weeks, with about an hour each day to complete this transformation from sweaters to pixie.
To make this costume, I first washed and dried the sweaters on the hot setting causing them to shrink or felt (in sewing terms) so that they do not unravel when cutting and sewing. Then, I cut the sweaters apart and made each skirt panel out of a different sweater and the same goes with the collar, the bodice was a sweater with the arms and collar removed.
After that, I sewed the skirt and the bodice together at the waist and attached the collar, along with bright colored buttons from an old dress. The headband was decorated with flowers also made from sweaters.
This is so awesome and I have to say I may be tweaking a bit…My daughter has been asking for a Fairy/Court Jester Costume…Think this would be an awesome way to do this. Thanks for the instruction!
Do you surge the edges off after cutting out? I am somewhat new to sewing and just don’t wanna make a costume and it fall apart while at the fair, my daughter might get upset with me…Please let me know…This is SO cute. I love it! Thanks
