This home sewn ladybug costume sewn for my 3 year old daughter is made out of a very basic dress pattern with some added frills.
The main bodice of the dress is sewn of crushed velvet recycled from last year’s costume. Over top of that I added red polka dot taffeta, also recycled (from a goodwill find), along with some ribbon detailing. Beneath the skirt I have 2 layers of black mesh used as a tutu to fluff out the skirt.
The wings were created by reshaping two metal clothes hangers and sewing more of the polka dot fabric over top. I then used black duct tape to join then together in the back… over top of that I added some fiberfill padding and cloth covering sewn onto that in order to keep the ends of the wire from becoming a scratch and poke hazard. I then opted to simply sew the wings onto a fixed point on the back of the dress rather than attach elastic arm straps as is most commonly done.
The headpiece is just a headband with polka dot fabric hot glued over top. I also hot glued black pipe cleaner antennae with small sewn fabric balls glued on top.
She wore the dress over a black turtleneck and pants. This dress took me less than a week to complete, and by using recycled fabrics and thrift store finds I spent less than $10 on it.
