I wanted to be something from the sea, so I looked at many pictures online and landed on some beautiful pix of orange jellyfish. I’m a stickler for detail, so I studied every main part of this creature.
To make the top piece of the Homemade Jellyfish Halloween Costume, I bought 1” thick green foam and cut it into a circle. Then I cut midway to the center and took a “v” out so the circle would be higher in the center and lower at the edges. I glued and sewed the foam together to form its new shape, covered both sides with plain orange fabric and started on the fancy outer fabric.
I used a sheer print fabric for the top, cut into triangles and sewn together to form the circle. The tentacles were sewn into long, tiny tubes, then turned right side out (not easy to do with sheer fabric, I assure you!). They were all hand sewn along the outer edge of the circle. I attached the headpiece to a hat so it would stay in place on my head.
The inside “oral arms” were made from iridescent sheer orange fabric, cut into strips and hand gathered individually using wide thread stitches, then attached to a black top and black leggings. I also used matching iridescent orange face/body paint to blend in.
The lightweight fabrics actually moved like a graceful jellyfish in the water- very effective.
