My daughter came home from preschool one day singing “Farmer in the Dell” and the idea just clicked. My husband works on computers and Dell is a well known name in our house so this Farmer In The Dell Costume was just too funny.
I started out by cutting a circle in the top of a box that would fit around my 4 years olds body. I then taped it down to make sure it would not come apart. I then cut most of the bottom of the box out so she was free to walk with the box on. I didn’t have an actual Dell computer box so I decided to make my own. I found the Dell logo on the internet and printed it out big enough to look real. I also printed out some fake shipping labels and Intel logo. I then hand painted the caution symbols all around the box.
To make the straps on the box I put a hole in each corner of the box and used the corn stock looking string adjusting the length to make it fit and tying a knot on the underneath side. I then hot glued some sun flowers, fall leaves and little people farm animals on the top of the box.
Next I made the hat. I took an old straw hat and hot glued more sun flowers, leaves and pumpkins on it. For the outfit I took an old button down shirt and some old blue jean overalls and decorated them with fall flowers and such. I also bought some rain boots for her to set off that farmer look. You could also add plastic garden tools and garden gloves to this outfit but at the time I went looking for these things – the garden season was over.
All in all the Farmer In The Dell Costume cost me next to nothing because I had most of the stuff right at home. The boots cost me $15 which she can reuse this winter and the flowers cost around $5.
The movement of this costume is very easy. My 4 years old had no trouble keeping it on and walking for long distances. Only thing you must do is take the box off when sitting down.
