The beautiful Geisha! This year a fourth child was added to our group costume- and the theme was Japan. Two Samurai, a Geisha costume and a baby Hello Kitty.
The Geisha kimono was home made from 2 yards of pink satin and one yard of orange. The Obi material was chosen from the decorator remnant bin at the fabric store. I don’t really work from patterns, I just look at pictures and imagine how they might be constructed/ what would be the easiest way to get the right look. The sleeves of the Kimono were important to me, and I lined them with orange. The neckline of the robe was also lined with orange. The Obi (the girdle part in the middle) was not really constructed but just pinned together and then held in place with a sash (I didn’t want to cut the fabric).
The wig was a store bought “1950’s pin up/ rocker” style wig that I styled into a Geisha fashion, and added some ornaments and a bone pin and flower. I did a lot of google image searches for Geisha to understand how the makeup should be and did my best with that. A final weird finishing touch was to alter a pair of socks so they had a toe and so that flip-flops could be worn. There are many videos on youtube about Geisha fashion and grace and I watched a few with my daughter and she really got into the very reserved graceful character. She pulled this Homemade Girl’s Geisha Costume off with her own personality! (and two Samurai guards!)
