I had no idea where to begin when my eight year old said she wanted to be a chocolate cupcake this year for Halloween. I was thrilled when I stumbled onto this website! The costume was surprisingly easy and fun to make. It took me awhile trying to figure how to attach the bottom pieces but was well worth it! She wore her leotard to the indoor parties so she wouldn’t be too hot and a pink fleece under it while Trick or Treating. We were worried Halloween would be cancelled again this year due to the hurricane but thankfully our neighborhood was spared! She did have some trouble going up and down stairs but she loved it anyway. We received compliments everywhere she went. She even won best costume at her school party!! Here is how we created our Cupcake:
The Bottom Half: Thanks to someone’s post, we went to the Dollar Tree for supplies. We found a small round laundry basket, poster board, wrapping paper, and ribbon for $4.
- Cut off the bottom of the laundry basket (with scissors). Then wrapped the rough edges with duct tape for added stability and so she wouldn’t get poked.
- The “Wrapper”: Used spray adhesive to attach the wrapping paper to the poster board. Once dry, folded it back and forth. Cut it in half the long way so I had two strips 11 x 28 inches. That turned out to be not long enough. Luckily, I had extra poster board and repeated the step in order to make a third segment. Glued the 3 segments together, wrapped it around the laundry basket, and used paper clips to hold the creases together until the glue dried.
- Chocolate layer: Measured around the wrapper and cut brown felt to that length and about 10 inches wide (could have been wider). Folded it in half and sewed one end and along the open side creating a long tube. Turned it right side out, stuffed it with poly-fil, and sewed the two ends together. Then hand stitched it to the top of the laundry basket.
- Cut and attached the ribbon to the front and back of the basket to use as suspenders.
- Using a hot glue gun, I glued the top of the Wrapper to the felt and the bottom to the duct tape.
The Top Half: I found the idea for the “Frosting” on foodnetwork.com. They had great detailed instructions which I tweaked for our needs. I bought 2 yards of pink fleece at JoAnn’s.
- Cut 3 strips of fleece, all 14 inches wide. The 1st piece was about 4 inches longer than the brown felt. The 2nd was 10 inches shorter than the 1st and the 3rd was 20 inches shorter than the 1st.
- Folded each piece in half and sewed them the same way as the brown felt, creating 3 long tubes. Turned right side out, stuffed with poly-fil and sewed the ends together creating 3 separate circles.
- Stacked them on top of each other and stitched them together. Make sure to leave arm holes between the top and middle layers.
- Sprinkles: Cut small pink straws (dollar bins at Target) into 1 inch segments and (using hot glue gun) glued them to onto the frosting. Tried adding other colors/objects for sprinkles but she only wanted the pink ones!
