She told me all the way back in January what she wanted to be. I’m an animation student and we had an assignment to design a new product. I decided to use the costume as my product. I designed the costume in 3ds Max. Then my mom gave me some old couch cushions and a friend gave me some foam core. I went to the store with the movie in hand to the buy fabric so I could match the color. I made stencils from the foam core and traced them onto the couch cushions, then cut the couch cushions into the shape. My mom used my 3ds Max design to make a pattern and she sewed the material together for the back fin. Everything else is cut and glued onto the cushions. I bought a white hooded sweatshirt and made periscopes from used tubes, foam core and material. I used Velcro to hold the fin onto the front part of the costume and to hold the periscopes onto the hood of the sweatshirt. The night of trick-or-treating, the back fell off and I couldn’t get it back on. I was really upset, but she didn’t care, she just wanted to go trick-or-treating. At least I got a good picture before it fell apart!
