Batman Villain Costumes: Penguin and The Riddler

My friend and I decided we wanted to be Batman villains for Halloween a couple years ago. My Riddler costume was pretty easy to make.

I bought a long sleeve cotton green dress on clearance from Old Navy and turned it into a tank top dress. I made stencils of all sizes for the “?” and used fabric spray paint to put them all over the dress. This looked really nice, but took awhile for it to dry. I had to do each side a different day.

I had a big black belt from another dress to use. The green foam paper “?” was hot glued onto the center of the belt. The top hat was found at the $1 spot in Target for St. Patrick’s day. I wanted to dazzle it up a bit, so I cut green felt and hot glued it on with some green sparkle ribbon to add a trim. I also used the ribbon to make cute cuff bracelets.

Lastly, the riddle cane. I bought a wood pole at a hardware store. Since I forgot to pick up a ping pong ball for the dot on the “?”, I improvised and used a golf ball. I cut out another “?” from the foam paper and hot glued everything together and spray painted everything gold. Unfortunately, the cane didn’t last very long as the golf ball was too heavy and kept snapping off.

My friend Erin wanted to be the Penguin. We used some business work clothes and cut out black felt sheets to make a longer tail on the back of her jacket. Another, St. Patrick’s day top hat was covered with black felt. A thin wood stick was purchased at a hardware store and we painted it black with a white tip to make it look similar to a cigarette. Of course we couldn’t forget the umbrella. We found an old black umbrella and painted the white all around it. This probably took the longest to dry, about a whole week since we did several coats of white.

Everyone loved our costume efforts, especially since the costume of that year was The Joker. Ours was something different.
