For Halloween 2013, we went as a group of Batman characters. We were (from left) Penguin, Batman, Bane, Two-Face, Robin, and Poison Ivy. We had such a great time putting these together and everyone loved the result!
We also created a Batmobile (1960s era) out of our garden cart. It’s made out of cardboard, red duct tape, black spray paint, and red sticker paper (for the Batman symbols on the side). It looked fabulous!
Here’s how I made these Batman and Robin costumes:
Materials:
- Black long-sleeved t-shirt
- Black running pants
- Yellow fabric paint / paintbrush
- Black sharpie
- Black gloves
- Black balaclava
- Batman mask
- Black twin-sized bed sheet (for cape)
- Metallic tape (for cape)
- Yellow duct tape (for utility belt)
- Walkie-talkie
- Flashlight
Our 10-year-old son wanted to be Batman for Halloween 2013. We went to the thrift store and purchased a long-sleeved black t-shirt and I hand-painted the Batman logo in the center of the chest (you could also do an iron-on transfer). We paired the shirt with black running pants he already had.
For the cape, I used a flat twin bed sheet and cut it to length. I cut out the scallops in the back and then lined the sides with reflective tape (since he was all in black and I wanted him to be safe trick-or-treating).
We found black gloves at the thrift store as well as the mask. I created the balaclava out of stretchy black fabric. I traced around his head, cut out the image, sewed the back half of the balaclava and cut out the face hole. I made it long so he could tuck it under his shirt.
The utility belt is yellow duct tape with a walkie-talkie and flashlight added. We even added a handmade plastic Batman symbol to the lens so when he turned on the flashlight, it showed a “Bat signal.”
His brother was Robin and they were perfect together!

Our 7-year-old son wanted to be Robin for Halloween 2013. He was “Teen Titans Robin” last year so we changed it to an all-red outfit (like Lego Robin) this year. We purchased a long-sleeved red t-shirt from the thrift shop and I hand-painted the logo and yellow bars on the shirt. We paired it with red running pants (also from the thrift store) and black gloves.
I found the elastic-backed mask at the thrift store for $.50. It’s a “masquerade”-type mask so I cut it into the Lego Robin shape.
