I got the inspiration for this costume from a shirt I bought from Kentucky for Kentucky designed by the talented Rachael Sinclair. This year I was inspired to dress in something that ties me to my roots, I am a Kentucky native after all. I also wanted to spread the news to all those city folk up here in Chicago that Kentucky is awesome.
Needless to say, the process was a tough one. I first got the chicken wire and paper mache materials and went to town. My wife was not at all pleased with the large, chicken shaped body lying in our living room floor, but she learned to live with it for the time being.
After shaping the chicken up, I cut out a hole large enough for my body to fit through, but small enough to hide the fact that I was in fact, both the chicken and the Colonel. I then used mod podge to cover it with feathers, and finalized the chicken with some toy eyes, a birthday hat for a beak, some red balloons as its wattles, and a nylon rope for the reigns.
The Colonel was bought (lame, I know), but I had only so much time to complete this masterpiece. My friends and wife all agreed it was one of the best costumes they had seen, and it even got me some recognition from the designer of the shirt and Kentucky for Kentucky with over 800 likes on their Instagram!
All in all, it’s been quite the journey, but just to see everyone’s reaction to how cool or interesting they thought it was made my day.
