Cool Sunflower Surprise Costume for a Woman

My costume was inspired by my love for sunflowers. Being in college, I didn’t have a lot of money to spend on a pre-packaged costume (some of them run about $40-70) so I had almost given up on dressing up at all for halloween. I remember my friend told me that I remind her of a sunflower because I have blonde hair and I am always smiling and it completely inspired me to find a way to make a sunflower costume. My original idea was just to make a sunflower belt and sunflower headband and kind of give off the idea of the flower without actually being one. However, the more I spun my wheels, the more I felt like I could push the idea to make it more funny. I decided that I was going to try to manufacture a costume in which the flower petals could collapse to my sides  (on each side of my body) when my arms were down and when I grabbed the top of each of the side petals above my head, it would make the sunflower come to life. I don’t sew so I had to go to the craft store and think while I was shopping. I was able to make this costume work with popsicle sticks, felt, and a hot glue gun. Making costume was so much fun because my best college friends and I all stayed up late working on our costumes, talking, laughing, and listening to music. My friends had a huge party on halloween night and the costume was an incredible success. Everyone asked me all night what I was when my petals were collapsed and then I shocked them by lifting the petals up to make the flower. Everyonea asked me to take pictures with  and it was so great making people laugh and making light of a holiday which sometimes people take too seriously when choosing costumes. I am incredibly proud of this and I got to wear something of a symbol of what I have loved since I was a little girl.
