This year my son asked to be Spongebob. I didn’t want to buy the costume because I thought it was a waste of money and not that cool of a costume if it were bought.
So, I used a banker’s box (not the actual banker box but the box that ships the banker box’s) from work (it gives that thin rectangular shape). I really wanted his costume to come to life and to be 3-D so I decided to use real sponges; which I split in half for a thin like sponge look. Hot glued gun the sponges to the box. I got a styrofoam ball and cut that in half for the eyes. Used brown felt for his pants; white felt for his shirt; and red felt for his tie and tongue.
I pretty much used cardboard for his eyelashes, belt, teeth, and mouth; all I did was use acrylic paint. I also lined his mouth with the scrapes of sponges to form the actual smile. His nose is just sponges rolled up; his eyes are painted white with the blue in the middle. All in all: cardboard, sponges, and hot glue gun will do it for this homemade Spongebob child Halloween costume idea. My son won best costume at his school! Have fun and you can do whatever you want.
