Our family’s absolute favorite TV show is NCIS, and one of our favorite characters is Abby Sciuto – the fantastically talented, enthusiastic, very highly caffeinated, Goth dressing forensic specialist. It didn’t take a state-of-the-art laboratory to find inspiration when my oldest said she wanted to go as Abby for Halloween.
For this Abby Sciuto NCIS Costume, a red and black plaid women’s tunic did double duty as a dress (and I got to wear it as a shirt after Halloween!), combat boots and red/black striped knee-highs rounded out the basics.
I got a child’s lab coat from a local party store and embroidered NCIS on the front. For Abby’s distinctive hair style, a black witch’s wig after a few tweaks worked great (I cut bangs and braided pigtails – the wig itself was on the cheap side, so I used the lengths cut for the bangs to help hide the seam that exposed down the center of the wig when the braids were made).
Accessories such as biker gloves, a ‘dog collar’ necklace and (temporary) tattoos helped the look (I freehanded her spider web neck tattoo with liquid black eyeliner).
The finishing touch was creating Abby’s signature, she’s almost never seen without it, drink of Caf-Pow. I printed out an image of the logo onto a huge sticker and applied to an extra large cup from a local fast-food chain. In the show’s earlier seasons, they used red Hawaiian Punch as the red for the drink, but to cut out potential spills, I painted the inside of the lid red.
Now our Abby is ready to analyze her own ‘evidence’ lots and lots of Halloween candy!!
