I researched on the coolest-homemade-costumes site and combined a few cupcake costume ideas. I started by going to a Dollar store and purchasing a small round laundry basket. First, I cut the bottom out of it Next, I tied two pieces of tulle ribbon to the laundry basket and used my daughter as a model to add suspenders to hold the costume up at the proper height and I tied them off. Next, I used a yard and a half of pink fabric with white polka dots. I wrapped it around the laundry basket and sort of pleated the fabric to give it a tapered look so it would look like a cupcake wrapper.
I attached the fabric on the top and bottom of the inside of the laundry basket (where it won’t be seen) with clear packaging tape. Next, I used some batting- about 3/4 a yard and just sort of folded it on top and around the laundry basket and played with it until it resembled icing. I then hot glued the batting to the top of the laundry basket all the way around. Then, I glued the next layer in a few places so it would not flop around. Next, I hot glued multi-colored pom poms all over the batting and an old white t-shirt of my daughter’s. Next, I found an old pink winter furry hat and hot glued a candle from an old birthday cake puzzle/game we had. She wore pink leggings and is featured here in tap shoes for her Halloween dance recital, but tennis shoes work well too!
