We were inspired by a cell phone commercial for this year’s costumes. A guy takes his old cell phone into a pawn shop and asks the clerk what he can get for it… “I give you Dancing Flower”. This was a toy that came out in the 80’s and I actually owned one. As soon as we saw the commercial we got excited to create these flowers.
The fabric is actually bathing suit material that we sewed together to create the body and the petals and the face. We stuffed the petals, leaves and face to give it a rounder, cartoonish look. We used A LOT of coat hangers to form the petals and they eyes are made out of felt and then glued on. The eyelashes on mine are pipe-cleaners (as are the teeth on my husbands), I added blush, a beauty mark and a small bee on one of my petals. Both mouths are made out of mesh.
The pots are made out of brown felt and pool noodles. The helmets were the hardest part to do. We found two plastic helmets and attached a bar for the face to sit on.
We had such a great time in these costumes. We danced by swaying around in circles! We hope you enjoy seeing them as much as we LOVED making them and being DANCING FLOWERS!
Great job! I remember the real dancing flowers and this is a great representation of those. I can not believe you did not wing, guess you needed a wing man to tell everyone how you guys made them, I find it helps to have someone brag for you, lol! I just love them, what do you have planned for next year?
These costumes are so original! Amazing job on them!
Thanks so much for your comments!!
I’m really glad you both liked the costumes… we had such fun in them!
A wing man is a great idea, lol! We will absolutely have to do that from now on!
Oh well, we’ll just take it as a compliment that the judges thought they weren’t home made!!!
