I made this Forrest Fairy costume for the faerieworlds festival 2011. My inspiration was just an idea – to become a “forest themed” fairy that could easily have come from the mossy woodlands of Oregon. I started with a bodice found online for 7$ and altered it – painting the lace a lighter green and adding moss and fuzzy cording. I made the skirt from scrap material.
I collected moss and lichen from the forests and created an overskirt, adding moss to each part of the costume to make it all more cohesive. I made the wings from 12 gauge wire and the flimsiest nylons I could find, spray painted them and burned a few lacy holes. The staff was created from an hold hiking stick and some fabric vines, and was lit on the inside with LED mini-lights (battery powered) and the inside ball painted with glow-in-the-dark paint for extra light at night.
The festival goes through midnight, so having a costume that lights up makes for extra fun. Green LED fiber optic hair barrettes completed the nighttime outfit. We received a lot of attention at the festival, posing for photos and getting compliments. I think the outfit was a big success!
