My daughter wanted to be a Peacock for Halloween, but all of the costumes available were either dresses or skirts with tails that hang off of your shoulders (like fairy wings). She did not want that – she wanted to look like the bird!
So we sewed up a Girl’s Peacock Costume with royal blue crushed velvet. We sewed feathers shapes to the arms to look like wings, and made the “bottom” extra large so that we could line it with foam and fill it with fluff. This was also the support for the tail.
For the tail, I sewed a fan shaped base, lined with foam. Dowel sticks were then inserted and glued in. We layered the tail with about 30 peacock feathers, and then the sword feathers and then we used green, blue and black feathers at the base. The tail would then insert into the body piece by lining up the dowel sticks to the slots sewn in the back.
The mask was decorated in the same fabric and sequined and feathered. The beak was added last. To make the Girl’s Peacock Costume complete, we used face paint to paint her eyes and added blue swirls on her cheeks. She got a lot of attention at trick-or-treat!
