When you have adult braces, there are only a few options that work for Halloween- Dorothy/School Girl/the girl from Scooby Doo/ or a girl scout- I chose girl scout as I wanted to make a merit sash that reflected all my adult achievements- sleeping, drinking, ghostbusting, underwater basket weaving, being a ninja and playing xbox to name a few!
I went to the costume store and looked at their ‘girl scout’ costume for SIXTY dollars. I could get a flimsy skirt/shirt/hat and plastic sash- SO not worth it! It was DIY time for a Homemade Adult Girl Scout Halloween Costume!
I scoured the thrift stores and found an old brown skirt and some khaki material. I sewed the shirt in an evening, while watching ‘How to Train your Dragon’ as I’m a sucker for cute Pixar films, and shortened the skirt to a less ‘appropriate’ length.
I also brought 2 yards of cheap brown fabric to make a sash, and copied my boyfriend’s eagle scout sash as my template. To make my ‘merit’ badges, I scoured the net for uncopyrighted images that reflected my ‘achievements’ as an adult and made myself a bunch of badges in Microsfot Paint- for cutting my fingers when cooking, travel, reading, being Scottish,’being overworked, being potty trained and facebook as well as the previously mentioned ones.
I printed them on an inkjet printer onto felt with adhesive backing (brought from Walmart for about $4). Then it was simple- cut them out, stick em on!
To complete my outfit, I pasted a British flag on my shirt (yes, I’m an expat!) And I found some Mary-Janes in my closet+white socks. I also swiped my boyfriends vintage boy scout hat, put my hair in ponytails and voila- girl scout!
Great idea, love it!
felt paper with glue backing, genious! I thought they were real.
