Alright you Primitive Screwheads, listen up! You see this? This… is my homemade Ash Halloween costume!!!
I’ve been making my own costumes for the past 5 years but this is the most involved that I have done so far. After seeing a tutorial on making the chainsaw hand, I decided that I would go for it. It paid off because I ended up winning 3 different costume contests with prizes totaling over $300!!
The entire costume cost just under $50!!
The hardest part was obviously making the chainsaw. I purchased a non-working from a local lawn mower shop. I was very fortunate to pick that up for only $10. I pulled out the engine, cut a hole in the back, added a handle on the inside. The metal top, handle, pull cord handle, and wrist cuff were all made from parts I got at Lowes. The on/off switch was bought from Radioshack. The bar and chain were borrowed from my dad’s real chainsaw. Add a little acrylic paint for blood and you’re ready to kill some Deadites.
The boomstick was hand made from a piece of 2×6 lumber. I traced the stock of my real 12 ga shotgun to get an outline. Cut that out and shaved the edges to get the basic shape. It took an hour or so on the belt sander to get the curve around the hand grip. The trigger guard was borrowed from another one of guns. The barrels were cut from pvc and spray painted black. The wood was colored using actual wood stain.
The shotgun holster was made from the sleeve of an old faux-leather jacket. The harness was made from steel rings from Lowes, webbed belts from Dollar Tree, and a couple leather belts from thrift stores.
The Pants and shirt were the easiest part. Found both for a $1 each at thrift stores. The shirt was ripped, rubbed in the grass, and smeared with soot from the fire pit. The boots were borrowed from my brother and I used a belt I already had.
The cuts on the face were made with lipstick. I used eye shadow to dirty up my face.
So there you have it. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments.
Remember… good costume making is all about the details.
Happy Halloween!!!
