Years ago we read a suggestion in Exceptional Parent magazine to incorporate the wheelchair into the Halloween costume. We’ve had lots of fun doing just that and making this Astronaut in a Rocket (or Driver in a Racecar) Wheelchair Costume!
We thought we were making an astronaut in a spaceship costume – but we discovered that most people thought we had a driver in a racecar, perhaps because the rocket was horizontal rather than vertical! Either way they liked it.
We used multiple boxes to create the rocket so that it would have the tapered shape and clearly defined “stages”. The spaceship was then covered with shiny Mylar paper. We attached string loops to the inside of the box for hanging the box from the wheelchair. The loops in the back were adjustable to be able to adjust the height/level of the box. A small piece of 1×1 can be used the inside edge of the box to add stability if the long side is bowing too much.
Christopher wore a store-bought costume (Power Ranger I think) for his space suit. A helmet would have been nice but we knew he wouldn’t tolerate that. I guess when he had his sunglasses on that added to the racecar driver look rather than the astronaut look!
