Coolest Homemade BP Oil Spill Costume

This year for Halloween I chose to dress up as the BP Oil Spill. I wanted to create something completely original where EVERYONE would know what I was (and if you didn’t hear about the BP oil spill, you must have been living in a cave for the past year). I bought the shiny, stretchy black dress from Forever 21 for 20$.

I looked online for images of signs that were posted on various beaches after the spill and painted my own sign using acrylic paints on a piece of cardboard that I cut from a box. I also printed out a BP logo on photo paper, laminated it, and wore it around my neck. The two pieces of caution tape I drew with markers and ‘laminated’ using packaging tape to make them sturdier and to avoid them from ripping, and I used safety pins to attach them to my dress.

I found various sea creatures at Michael’s (they were actually those things you put in water and they grow 6x the original size over the course of a couple of days). I had a sting ray, crab, sea turtle, octopus, and starfish which I painted black and sewed to my dress. The seaweed was made of a green paper table cloth from the dollar store and a black garbage bag. Both items were cut into about 2-inch thick strips and tied around the string.

I was able to string the seaweed boa through the back of my dress and tuck the other end into a black stretchy belt I wore with it. The costume was completed with fishnet tights and black face makeup that comes in a tube (Walmart = 1$) and I just rubbed it on my hands and slathered it all over my body. I had a TON of fun making this homemade BP oil spill costume, and it was a big hit!
