This Braveheart Costume Idea is fairly simple…more about the artistic eye than technical skill, really. I took a simple tan undershirt, soaked it in tea to make it dirty, then cut out all buttons and seams and replaced them with leather laces.
His boots, leather wrist-cuffs, and sword were made out of fabric scraps, a broken venetian blind, and cardboard. I also soaked the plaid fabric in tea for several days to dull it out. I studied the movie and several other examples of traditional kilts to make sure it was draped right. Then I rubbed dirt in his hair and on his face and arms to make him authentically filthy before I painted the blue warpaint on his face.
This was cheap Walmart face paint in white and blue that I mixed to get the correct hue. We then splattered him with fake blood. He won first place in two contests!
