My three year old son LOVES Buzz Lightyear and so it was a no-brainer to him that he wanted a Homemade Buzz Lightyear Toddler Costume for Halloween. So after looking through all the homemade Buzz costumes I could find (there aren’t as many as you’d think) I decided to use try one using cardboard boxes.
First I cut a hole big enough for his head to go through and cut the edges of the box and rounded the sides where his arms were (see pictures). Then, I wrapped the big box and several small boxes in lime wrapping paper. I then taped the little ones inside the big one to act as spacers so the box wouldn’t slide around. After that, I cut a slit for the salad bowl to go in. I pushed in a bit and secured it with tape. And that was the basic construction of the body. Just added the craft foam buttons, logo and name tag and voila!
For the wings, I cut a small box open and secured two pieces of cardboard inside then taped it shut. The “pack” part is just wrapped in computer paper and then decorated accordingly. The wings are wrapped in purple plastic table cloth (I couldn’t find purple wrapping paper)and topped with printer paper I colored by hand. The ends are rolled up pieces of cardboard covered in paper. The “lights” on the wing tips are clear colored pony beads on pipe cleaners wound up and glued.
For the wrist cuffs, I used plastic juice concentrate cans wrapped in printer paper with a green paper top and a red pony bead on one for the laser. I used the ends of the containers and covered them with the purple to make the “thingys” on the helmet. My mom sewed his boot covers from a pattern she used a few years ago to make their super hero costumes. I sewed his purple hood by making a “pattern” of sorts. He had a black material belt to wear but my husband forgot to put it on him for Halloween.
It was really easy!! I found the materials in my recycle bin, my craft stash, the Dollar Tree, and Walmart. The jet pack boosters and the Star Command logo I printed off. He looked awesome had a blast being Buzz!!
