A Christmas Story is one of our favorite movies! These homemade Christmas story costumes were a definite crowd pleaser.
The leg lamp costume was a little difficult to make. We cut out a pattern using newspaper to make the panels for the shade. You can make the shade as long as you want. We went with a little above the knee. A shiny gold material was used. Once all the panels were sewn together, a hem was sewn by machine for the top and bottom. Don’t forget to make arm holes when sewing the panels together. Then we used a large hula hoop for the bottom and a large quilting hoop for the top. Both hoops were cut and pushed through the hem and sewn up by hand.
A gold braided cord was sewn on the seams of the panels. The black fringe was added with hot glue. Black fish net tights and black pumps are a must. I think the t-shirt with black iron on letters spelling out ‘Fragile’ tied the costume together.
Ralphie’s costume was purchased at different stores. A sweater, flannel shirt, scarf and khaki pants were worn. Mittens were pinned at the wrists on the sweater. The glasses were perfect with a small crack.
The dog’s costume was made from pink fleece. A white bunny tail was added with hot glue. She needed some ‘pink bunny slippers’. I simply made a wrap for her legs. The bunny head with oogly eyes was added with hot glue on the wrap. The pink bunny ears were purchased at Pet Co. Her nails were also painted hot pink. Black iron on letters spelling out ‘pink nightmare’ were added to both sides of her costume.
