I’ve been making homemade Batman costumes for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid I was forever messing up my mother’s washing machine with Rit Dye to see just how perfect I could get a bed sheet to look like a cape. Well, they say that practice makes perfect and I think I’ve finally got it down. I wish I had a picture of all the ones I have made over the years…(at least 15 if not more).
Over the years I’ve entered countless Halloween contests, and actually pulled off a 2nd prize once, but found out later it should have been 1st but the contest was fixed and I was beat out by a pregnant girl in a Mr. Peanut suit.
Knowledge is power so they say and with that thought in mind here are a few tips on the perfect cowl. In making any mask for any costume everyone who has tried will tell you that the eye-holes are the hardest thing to get right. So I figured I’d let someone else handle those for me.
I brought one of those hard plastic Batman masks that you find, the kind with no back of the head on it just the face mask with 2 bat ears on it. I cut the ears off and cut the bill off of a nice tight fitting baseball cap. I Go-rilla glued the face piece to the cap and then built around it. Using foam rubber I shaped the ears and glued them to the cap. Then using Tacky glue I attached the material (T-shirt sheets stretchy material is awesome for mask and cape) to the cap and mask forming the back and sides of the head and had created the perfect cowl.
Everything else was pretty basic since I was shooting for the original black and gray homemade classic Batman costume.
