Coolest Homemade Ebeneezer Scrooge Costume

I put Ebeneezer Scrooge together for SantaCon 2009 in New Haven. I figured that with dozens of red suited Santa Clauses running around, I would try and ruin everyone’s Christmas. Bah, humbug! I thought nobody would know what the character was, but everyone figured it out right away.

This Homemade Ebeneezer Scrooge Costume is quite simple. I had most everything in my closet already, or is available pretty cheap from thrift stores, or could be rented from a formal shop.

I used a top hat and blueish-gray wig. I picked up a round, wire rimmed spectacles for a couple of bucks at a flea market, where I also found cheap real wooden pipe.

A black vest came from days as a waiter, and I wore a plain, white, standard dress shirt with the collar turned up. Regular silk necktie with the knot two inches from the bottom produces the old-time look. Gray pinstriped trousers, black leather shoes are standard.

Probably the hardest to find for most people would be the tailcoat, which I already owned. However, they are available from formal wear rental places pretty much all the time.

A few minor details complete the costume – I wore a pocket watch and chain, but you could use any simple, 12 inch chain for this costume. A black wool overcoat was needed in New Haven as Connecticut gets cold in December, but you could skip it if you live in a warm area.

Lastly, don’t forget to scowl and frown and call out “Bah, humbug” plenty of times.
