The homemade fire hydrant Halloween costume was a lot of fun to make. I started by purchasing 1 1/2 yards red felt, 1 yard of a darker red colored material, and some bendable wire at Wal-Mart. I had a lady sew casing to the top and bottom of the felt piece and then I fed the wire through to give it a cylinder shape, like a hydrant. From there, I placed Velcro strips down the back of the costume to keep it shut once it was on.
The nozzles were made out of foam pieces covered with the darker red material and attached with Velcro. The stripes on the shirt are pieces of the darker red material and hot glued to the felt. The ‘nozzle hat’ was foam pieces covered with the darker red material hot glued together. I took my husband’s old red bath robe tie, hot glued it to the bottom of the ‘nozzle hat’ and then tied it to my head.
