This is what you will need for this homemade Fred and Wilma couple costume (all of the items can be purchased at the fabric or craft store):
* A couple of yards of orange fleece (big enough to fit your man)
* 3 sheets of black felt 8 1/2 by 11
* Fabric glue
* Bright blue cotton fabric (about a half a yard)
* A couple of yards of white jersey fabric (big enough to fit yourself)
* Styrofoam balls about 1-1 1/2 inches (these can be found in the artificial flower section)
* Skinny white ribbon (enough to tie around your neck)
* Earring hooks and backs
* Superglue
* Scissors
* Sewing machine or needle and thread
* White, orange and bright blue thread
* Iron
I’ll start with the tie… the easiest part! If your guy has a tie in his closet, use it as a guide. Lay the tie on top of the blue fabric. Then cut around the entire tie leaving about 2 inches extra on each side. It doesn’t have to be perfect, so don’t worry!
You then fold all of the edges over about half an inch and iron them so you can see the crease. Time to take out your fabric glue! Just glue down all of the edges and let it sit for 24 hours. It is a good idea to lay a book on top to flatten it.
Now for Fred’s outfit. Fold the orange fabric in half making sure the folds are at the top of the garment. Use one of your man’s t-shirts and lay it on top of the fabric with the top of the shoulders lining up with the top of where the folds are. This is basically to make sure it fits him. If he wears tight fitting shirts, you might want to use a baggier shirt.
Fold the arms in so you don’t cut them. Now, leaving a couple of inches on each side (just like the tie), you are going to cut the outline of the shirt also leaving it long enough to go past your man’s knees.
Next, cut the jagged edges in the bottom of the fabric. Time to sew the sides together. You can put the garment on the guy and measure it to fit him so it’s not too tight. Make sure to leave arm holes! The finishing touch is to cut the black felt in two kind of rounded triangles and glue them (with fabric glue) randomly on the front and back of the garment. Leave it to dry for at least 24 hours!
The Wilma costume is very similar to Fred’s. Use one of your tank tops with about a 2-inch strap as the pattern for your dress. Make your dress as short or as long as you want! After cutting out the pattern on the white jersey fabric, just cut one of the sleeves off! I try it on first to see where I should make the cut. Cut a long strip of the extra white fabric for the belt.
For the earrings, take the earring hooks and push them about halfway into one of the Styrofoam balls. Then remove them. Put superglue on the end of the earring hook and then put it back in. Hold the earring back there for about a minute until the glue dries. Now you have your earrings! Warning: they are not the most comfortable things to wear, but it really makes the costume!
Now the necklace…Take a needle and string the white ribbon through the eye. Then string the Styrofoam through, until you have a necklace to fit your neck!
Hi where did you get your wig from????
