Coolest Gene Simmons KISS DIY Costume

I made this “DYNASTY” tour costume to wear at Kiss’ first Melbourne (Australia) concert way back in 1980. It was made out of sponge rubber. Similar to the inside of car seats. The surface was given the rough, choppy look by using scissors. The whole suit skin was then spray painted a silver color. The cape was red ‘tafata’ material. The shoes had to be elevated to get them to a 6 inch height.

It took me a couple of months to finish. We didn’t have the internet back then and living in Australia made it difficult to get a hold of descent photos of the actual costume to copy it. Anyway, it turned heads at the concert. A few concert goers asked to have their pics taken with me and the local ch 2 news crew took some footage too. The photos here were taken in the main street of Leongatha, Victoria by the local paper. It ended up on the front page.

In 2008 I went back to the paper to see if they had the negatives as I wanted a new copy of the photo. I was astounded to learn that there were 3 different photos taken back then and that all negatives still existed. They let me take them to the photographers next door and I got the three 8″x 10″ B/W photos printed at a cost of $45.00.

I’m now 50 and still a big KISS fan. Here’s something spooky: Gene And Shannon were married this year on Oct 1st after 28 years together. On Oct 1st this year, My wife and I celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary. She always says that Gene and I were separated at birth.
