This Headless Girl persona overtakes me every year on Halloween. I feel it coming on, kind of like a sneeze, and to deny its full expression would be every bit as dissatisfying and frustrating as not to sneeze.
My homemade Headless Girl Halloween costume looks a little different every year, as she finds newer and grosser ways to manifest, and this was my latest. What does not change, however, is the effect I have on the neighborhood; people absolutely freak out.
This year, in Montgomery, AL, after the trick-or-treaters had disappeared, I took Headless Girl on the road. We went to The Rave, The Mellow Mushroom and Winn Dixie and, although entered no contests, we knew lots of kids would be sleeping with the lights on for a while!
