My daughter is 6 years old and this year we kept asking her what she wanted to be for Halloween but she was undecided. I thought of all the things she really liked and knew that she loved Barbie dolls. I decided, therefore, to make my daughter a Homemade Holiday Barbie Costume. It would certainly be cheaper than a store-bought costume!
I had kept the box from her Barbie house which she got for Christmas last year so I used that. I cut the box and wrapped it with wrapping paper from the Dollar store. I thought about what accessories would normally be included in a Barbie box; although, at first, I wanted to include many items, we ended up only using a few because we didn’t want to make it too heavy or crowded for our daughter.
Our first idea was just to tie the box around her waist, but her step-dad came up with the idea of wearing it on her back. We had an old book bag from which we cut the back panel and the straps; we then secured it on the outside of the box, along with a belt to keep it balanced.
She dressed up in a red holiday dress and I did her hair and makeup. At first she was embarrassed to wear her Holiday Barbie costume, but she received so many compliments on Saturday night that, by the end of the night, she was ok.
