This Homemade Jack the Pumpkin King Costume is for my son, Gabriel (5 years old). I wanted to make the mask of out paper-mache so I started by measuring my son’s head and blowing up a balloon to a size that was about 2-3 inches taller and larger in diameter than his actual head measurements.
I then wrapped the balloon in Rigid Wrap(R) plaster gauze and let it harden for days. I put the mask on my son’s head and made marks for the eye holes. Cutting the eyes came next.
I then glued Poly-Fil traditional quilt batting to the inside of the mask to make it a tighter fit and to cushion the inside to make it nice and soft to wear. I covered the eye holes with a very sheer black fabric that my son could completely see through.
I coated the entire mask with white paint and then painted black around the eyes to make them stand out more. The mouth came next. The bat bow tie I made out of foam sheet, silver puff paint designed for foam and fimo clay. The bat head I made out of fimo and the wings were made from black foam sheets. I painted the bat and the wings with shiny silver paint and tied it around my son’s neck with a ribbon.
He wore a plain white T-shirt under the shirt I made out of pinstripe material. His pants were also made out of pinstripe material
