My husband and I wanted to make some costumes for Dragon Con in Atlanta that we could also use for Halloween. We loved the Johnny Depp version of the Mad Hatter in the new “Alice in Wonderland” coming out in 2010.
The Mad Hatter’s jacket, I constructed on top of an old tail coat we had in the closet. The hat was a Dicken’s caroler’s hat bought online. We covered it with layers of fabric patches covered with lace and stickpins, labels. A similar print for the bow tie was found, but with a white background. Out came the sharpie’s and I colored the ground black.
Makeup, pants and boots and wigs for the two of us made it complete. These were fun and comfortable to wear and very popular with everyone. This is our Homemade Johnny Depp Mad Hatter Costume.
Hilarious that you sharpied the tie. I found an old satin scarf with colors all over it and I sharpied the white part black!
