Although reluctant, I convinced my boyfriend to dress up as Ken to match my Barbie costume! All materials for my costume were purchased at a local fabric store (Mary-Jo’s in Gastonia, NC) and a friend used a 1950’s bathing suit pattern to make the swimsuit. I ordered a 1959 Barbie watch, Nicki Minaj Barbie ring, and gold hoop earrings from Amazon. Red nail polish, lipstick, and eyelashes were purchased from Ulta.
We actually found his red shorts and striped shirt at Goodwill. Needless to say, his $4 costume didn’t compare to my $100 costume! We wore matching name tags that resembled class reunion stickers. Each tag read, “Hello my name is Barbie/Ken, class of 1959.” The temperature dropped Halloween night so we were rather cold! We attended a party at Pleasant City in Shelby Friday night, the Music, Monsters, and Mayhem bash in Charlotte Saturday night, and Owl’s Eye Winery Halloween night.
The best reactions were from people who were “shocked” that I would wear a swimsuit in public! Obviously other costumes covered much less! Other than going through three pairs of expensive panty hose, we had a fabulous Halloween!
