Coolest Homemade Loofa Costume

Three of my friends and myself made the Homemade Loofa Costume. We ended up winning second place in a huge costume contest. We had our boyfriends dress up as bars of soap.

We used a white tube dress and dyed it (using Rit dye) the color we wanted our loofas to be. We then lopped about 30 yards of tulle around the dresses back and forth and used safety pins to hold it in place. It took several attempts at pinning the whole thing to get it right and then we used extra tulle to fill in any holes.

We got simple rope from Lowes and simply looped it around our necks (we chose not to attach them to the dress, we just stuffed it in the front). We also got headbands and attached balloons to them to look like bubbles. With everything included it probably ended up costing about $40.

We got tons of compliments all night. Everyone LOVED the Loofa idea and we actually made back some of the money we spent on the costumes by winning the costume contest.

  1. Hi! I love this idea and this is what I have chosen to be this Halloween but, Im so confused at how the “puffs” are so puffy???

Did you cut the tulle in squares and then bunch them? If you did how big were your squares?

    Thanks for your help!

  2. Hello,

I’m trying to do this costume for this Halloween, but I cannot seem to find a normal sized roll of tulle on Amazon. They are all very narrow. Do you think it would work with a 6″ x 100 yard roll? I live in England and fabric here is quite expensive. It would cost me around 40 pounds for 20 yards. :(
